Kia Orana!

Welcome to the Cook Islands Tourism Industry Council

The Cook Islands Tourism Industry Council was formed in 2008 and we are engaged in promoting the interests of our members and the tourism industry at large; sometimes independently, other times alongside government and other stakeholders. But always with the sole aim of improving the quality of the Cook Islands as a destination, so that visitors to our shores can enjoy the best possible experience.

We have come a long way since the first Air New Zealand DC-8 service landed in Rarotonga in December 1973 and opened our doors to the rest of the world. Today we represent over 175 businesses, comprising airlines, accommodators, tours, transport, inbound tour operators, travel agencies, retailers, restaurants, banks, publishers and others. Collectively our members employ the vast majority of tourism sector employees in the country and generate in excess of $200m annually in revenues; roughly half of the country’s GDP.

The CI Tourism Industry Council has unsurprisingly been focused almost entirely on the industry effects of Covid and no post-Covid recovery during the last four years. The industry is improving - this year is better than last year, and last year was better than the year before - but we are still very much in recovery mode for 2023.

Our biennial schedule for the Air New Zealand Cook Islands Tourism Industry Awards has had to be paused due to Covid. But we are looking forward to resuming the next awards cycle in the future, where we will recognise and celebrate excellence in our tourism industry.

So, whether you’re a new visitor or returning, we warmly invite you to join in our celebrations as you explore the unmatched natural beauty of our islands and discover your perfect holiday location.

Kia Manuia,

Liana Scott (President)
